ABOUT

"Live to make your inner twelve year-old happy."

While it may not be the best advice to follow in finance or health -- daily cheeseburgers and LAN parties are hardly a safe prescription for adulthood -- this mantra has done me well when applied to my artistic pursuits. It's why I jumped at the chance to learn my drawing fundamentals from a seasoned comic book artist as a kid. It's why I spent my snow days pouring through the special features of my favorite DVDs, recreating film scenes with whatever I could find in the garage. Most recently, it's what brought me to the Gnomon School of Visual Effects and Animation in Los Angeles.

At Gnomon, I started as a generalist to experience as much of the production pipeline as I could. Though I enjoyed every step of the process, animation is where I knew I had to specialize. Maybe there's a parallel between finding the most expressive pose for a character in a scene and doing the same for an action figure on my shelf. Maybe hitting the play button and watching the finished scene come to life is the ultimate magic trick. One thing is certain: I've never felt more like a kid than when I animated a rig for the first time -- and in keeping with my mantra, I started with a raptor.
